本書は，Flexible Assembly Systems (FASs) に焦点を絞って，そこでの生産・物流に関するプラニングやスケジューリングの問題を扱ったものである．全体で7章から構成されており，まず 1章および2章で FASs の定義・分類や，その設計およびそこでのプラニング・スケジューリングに関する主な問題が整理されている．続く3章～7章では，典型的・代表的な問題が取り上げられ， Operations Research (OR) アプローチを基本としたモデリングや解法についての議論が展開されている．
スケジューリングの問題という観点からは，従来のスケジューリング理論・手法で対象とされているクラスの問題だけでなく，有限バッファの問題やJust-in-Time 生産におけるスケジューリング問題など，より現実に即した問題のクラスが扱われていることが本書の特徴である．
さらに，本書は (もちろんスタンダードなスケジューリング理論・手法のテキストとして位置付けられるものではないが)， FASs という問題側での興味のみならず，様々な問題に対する OR モデルや解法アプローチが紹介されているという点において，広範な読者の興味を惹く書物の一つになりうるのではなかろうか．
